1. Total number and types of crimes

- Based on 2022 data, more than 50,000 crimes have been reported in Vietnam as a whole.

In 2025, as infrastructure is being built, especially in urban areas, security is stabilizing in the surrounding areas, but once in the suburbs, there is a discrepancy with the information on the Internet, so it is not safe to assume that security will be stable.

- Types of Crime:

- Theft: the most common of all crimes and includes, among others, motorcycle thefts and bag pickpocketing in the city. 40-50% of all crimes are related to theft.

  - Scams: bank and online scams, especially targeting tourists, are a problem. 30-35% of the total.

- Violent Crime: Although less common overall, incidents of domestic violence and fights resulting in violence do occur. 5-10% of the total.

- Traffic-related crimes: Violations of traffic rules and drunk driving are reported, but are rarely treated as criminal offenses.

#### 2. Crime by region

- Da Nang:

- Theft and fraud are common, and crimes targeting tourists tend to increase during the tourist season.

  - Major crimes: theft, tourism fraud, traffic accidents.

Additional info:.

To be honest, it is safe enough to walk alone at night without any problems.

The streets are wide enough for families to feel safe during the day.

In recent years, the city has also been cracking down on drunkenness, which has dramatically increased the level of traffic safety in the city.

However, there are many cabs, restaurants, and bars that offer light fare and rip-offs, and because it is a resort area, the probability of petty crime increases when returning home from a bar.

Also, be careful of crowds at World Heritage sites such as Hoi An.

Hue, a World Heritage site, is a quiet and relaxing city that is relatively safe. Recently, the number of foreign tourists has been increasing, so be on your guard.

Danger level:️★

- Halong:

- Relatively safe, but there are reports of theft and fraud during the tourist season, so caution is advised.

- Major crimes: theft, fraud.

Additional Information: Halong is an industrial area despite being a tourist destination.

Halong is an industrial area as well as a tourist destination.

No matter how strong your body or mind is, you should never get into trouble in this area.

Danger rating:️️️️️★★★

- Nha Trang:

- Thefts and small-scale scams targeting tourists are prevalent, and caution should be exercised around beaches and tourist facilities.

- Major crimes: theft, employment scams.

Additional information:.

The resorts are notoriously tricky.

The service and hospitality are more likely to be a problem.

Of course, beware of scams and rip-offs.

Danger: ★️️

- Hanoi:

- As the capital city, Hanoi experiences a variety of crimes, but the number of crimes has remained stable over the years. Theft and violence have been reported in some areas.

- Major crimes: theft, fraud (especially online), domestic violence. Bag pickpocketing has been observed on public transportation and in tourist areas, so caution should be exercised.

Additional information:.

Hanoi is representative of the likes and dislikes of the city.

In the winter, the city is cold and constantly foggy, but it is also a magical mix of French-style buildings and Vietnamese culture.

Because of the large population, it is easy to get into trouble with others, and it is a priority to stay out of it.

If you feel even the slightest sense of danger, check the area and leave first.

Electric lines are everywhere, and during the rainy season, accidents involving electric shock can occur, so be sure to stay out of puddles.

Also, be careful around construction sites.

Always be sure to check the scaffolding.

The city at night can be dangerous, so do not follow touts and avoid getting drunk.

Danger level:️️️️★★★

- Ho Chi Minh City:

- Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam and also the area with the most crime. Thefts (motorcycle thefts, bag pickpocketing) are particularly frequent, as are scams targeting tourists.

- Major crimes: theft, fraud, violent crimes. It is important to take safety precautions in tourist areas and downtown areas.

Additional Information: The city has a stable service and hospitality industry.

Service and hospitality are stabilizing.

However, there are still many unpleasant surprises in the suburban Mekong Cruise and Cu Chi Tunnels, such as pushy salespeople and souvenir shops.

Also, the urbanization of the country makes sightseeing safer, and after a few days in the city, you may be tempted to venture out because the streets are uninspiring, but hold your nerve and consult with a local coordinator for information.

Danger level:️️️★★★

#### 3. Crimes Involving Foreign Nationals

- Crime involving foreigners is also on the rise, mostly related to theft and fraud. Bag pickpocketing and app-based scams (e.g., fraudulent cab services and accommodation booking scams) have been reported, especially in tourist areas.

#### 4. Safety measures as a tourist

- General safety precautions:.

- When in crowded places or tourist areas, take good care of your valuables and hold your bag in front of you to prevent crime.

- Be wary of solicitations from strangers and be especially cautious about online transactions.

- Local Transportation:.

- When using a cab or vehicle, it is important to use a reliable company or app (e.g. Grab).

- When it comes to sightseeing and transportation, consulting local guides and local coordinators will make your trip safer and more comfortable. We recommend that you take advantage of professional assistance to avoid the risk of discomfort to the greatest extent possible.

#### 5. Security Index

- Security Index Comparison: Vietnam's security index is moderate and relatively stable compared to other Asian countries. Crime is high compared to Japan and Singapore, but safe compared to Thailand and the Philippines.

Firearms are rarely used in Vietnam, but muggings with knives are rare in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Halong, so be careful.

- Global Peace Index (GPI): As of 2021, Vietnam was ranked 111th (out of 163 countries) in the GPI ranking. While security indicators are improving, there is still crime in some areas, so caution should be exercised.

Although the overall GPI is low, resort cities such as Danang, Dalat, Phu Quoc, Sapa, and Qui Nhon have excellent security, except for petty crimes and traffic accidents.

### General summary

Overall, security in Vietnam is relatively stable, but caution should be exercised, especially in urban areas and tourist destinations. In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the number of crimes is high, and there are crimes especially targeting tourists. You can enhance the quality of your trip by taking safety precautions at all times during your visit and by using local vehicles, guides, and the assistance of local coordinators, as the case may be. We recommend that you consult the official websites of the Vietnamese government and international organizations for the most up-to-date information.
